I asked people on Facebook where they get stuck in Wakefield traffic. The responses gave us something useful: specific streets, intersections and times of day where people are running into problems.
Water Street at Main Street came up repeatedly. People described difficulty turning left, waiting at the lights and getting held up behind vehicles trying to turn. Several suggested a left turn arrow or separate signal time for the opposing approaches.
Others pointed to morning traffic on Nahant Street and weekday afternoon backups on Albion approaching the railroad tracks. Some described taking a longer route to avoid the congestion. Kathleen Turner and Eleanor Axelrod also described difficulty getting onto Prospect Street and how that affects trips into downtown.
The experiences vary. Matthew Karlsson said he usually encounters only modest delays approaching Main Street from Nahant around 8 a.m. That belongs in the discussion, too. Knowing when traffic moves reasonably well helps us understand when and where to look more closely.
The reviewed Facebook comments identified 12 potential topics. My morning observations around Galvin add a separate neighborhood safety concern, bringing this working list to 13. Five now have draft requests: Water at Main, Nahant at Main, Albion approaching the tracks, a morning right turn lane into Galvin, and morning right turn only exits from Richardson and Bennett. The other concerns are listed below as we gather more information.
Each request will describe the problem residents reported and ask the town to review it. Suggestions about lights, parking or turning lanes deserve consideration, with pedestrian safety and access included in that review.
We can ask the town to take more time with the larger transportation plan while pursuing practical improvements now. Getting children to school, reaching downtown businesses and getting home from work all matter in the meantime.
Each topic now has a permanent CM Traffic reference in the master register, alongside earlier traffic and TAC requests. This section will track what we ask, when we submit it, what the town says and any resulting action. For now, the five new requests are drafts. Keep sharing the location, direction of travel, day and approximate time. Photos taken safely can help show what’s happening. Thank you to everyone helping move this forward.
